Originally from Bute or possibly from the gaelic word meaning fair, the family were connected to the Bruce and were given lands around Kilmarnock where they built Dean or Kilmarnock Castle. They took various sides at different times with the fourth earl being beheaded after Culloden. The family still exists but now lives in England.
