Kilmarnock
Town in East Ayrshire that is ancient and grew in the Industrial revolution. Now the town is attentpting to create a regenerated post-industrial future.
Kilmarnock is the 2nd largest town in Ayrshire after Ayr itself and sits on the main road south from Glasgow. The town was relatively modest until the Industrial Revolution at which point is became famous for its textiles and shoes. The Titanic's carpets were from Killie. It was also the home to Johnnie Walker Whiskies until the factory closed in 2011.
Today, the town remains poised between that industrial past and a new future which is not truly mapped out.
The first Robert Burns book was published in Kilmarnock and is now rare and very valuable.
Tourists as a whole tend to bypass Kilmarnock as they travel to the Ayrshire Coast or down to Dumfries.
