The history of Kirkmichael is impressive and dates back to 1200s when John de Gemmelstoun initiated a church which he dedicated to St Michael. The village was then named after him and was known as Kirkmichael of Gemilston and later was further changed. The church seen here was designed in a T-design in order to accommodate more people in a limited space. The church was unique in its class with its architectural style and the lich gate.
