Isle of Whithorn

Isle of Whithorn is a little village located near the southern tip of the Machars. This southerly community of Scotland is a picturesque site surrounded with natural bliss. Being part of Dumfries and Galloway it is rich in history and linked to land and sea.

The misnamed Isle of Whithorn, isn't an island at all but an atmospheric old fishing village built around a natural harbour.The place has a graceful crescent of shores and attractive houses it remained a perfect location for film makers and holiday snap business. If we look into the past we will find that The Isle as it was called in the Machars peninsula has a lot to offer for the tourist. This tiny place also was the beginning of Scotland’s Christian history when Ninian Scotland’s first Christian saint landed here. Along the coast to the west of the village is St Ninian's Cave, said to have been used by the saint as a private place of prayer. It is reached via a footpath off the A747 before entering the Isle of Whithorn. Another attraction here is the sheltered anchorage and quay which provides the focal point of the village. The countryside along the village is rich in ecosystem and splendid natural sceneries.

The sea route remained the main way of transportation and also a haunt for smugglers and for traders. Not thickly populated with a total attendance of three hundred people this place is ideal for a hassle free weekend.

One can find some great hotels, guest houses and holiday homes which boast cozy stay with all modern amenities for visitors in idyllic surroundings. Fishing is the main activity of the locals. Isle of Whithorn is well connected by roads with A75 and other single track roads to nearby places.
