Auchencairn
Auchencairn is a tiny hamlet in the southwest corner of Scotland known as Dumfries and Galloway...
Auchencairn is a traditional Scottish village consisting mainly of stone houses dating from the early 17th century. Often described as 'Scotland in miniature' , it is a haven for tourists as it offers a great deal to walkers, cyclists, wildlife enthusiasts and beach lovers.
It is on the A711 coast road from Dalbeattie to Kirkcudbright. Though this region is less frequented by tourists who overlook Auchencairn in favour of Highlands and islands, it has its share of mountains, abbeys and castles. Close to the Solway coast, with its long indented coastline of sheltered sandy coves this area is also called the Scottish Riviera. It is the warmest southernmost stretch in Scotland and is an area of unspoiled hills, cliffs, islands, bays and beaches.
Auchencairn has a pleasant climate because of its strategic coastal position and there is a lively and welcoming community that takes pride in the history of their village.Auchcairn has some spectacular walking trails along the hills of Screel and Bengairn, situated to its north. These hills may be walked separately or together depending on your time and experience levels. There is no clear path to the summit and there are rocky cliffs and sharp edges. Though the walk is not too strenuous it might not be a good option for those who have a fear of heights.
Galloway is associated with Robert the Bruce and Dumfries was made famous by Robert Burns, who spent most of his life here. Castle Douglas is one of the neighbouring towns.
