A mile west of Leith is the little port of Newhaven, once a busy fishing community and one of the most colourful and interesting parts of Edinburgh.
The fishing has now gone and though the little fishermen's cottages have been restored, there is no life left in the place, other than the occasional pleasure yacht in the harbour. The village's proud maritime past is told in the excellent Newhaven Heritage Museum, 24 Pier Place. The little, one-room museum has hands-on exhibits, a dressing-up box, evocative living history recordings and various activities for children. Daily 1200-1700, free, Tel: 5514165, take bus 7, 10, 11 or 16 from Leith Walk.
