Castle of Mey
Castle on far North coast that was home to the Queen Mother. Now open for visitors. Excellent gardens.
The castle is a very pretty Z plan tower overlooking the coast towards the Orkneys. It has a particularly fine garden and if you are nearby in good weather, you should definately visit.
The castle was built in the 16th century and was home to the Earls of Caithness before passing through various hands until it was bought by Queen Elizabeth in 1952. She restored the castle and also created the fine gardens around the castle. It is now owned by a trust.
