Day 1
After an early start departing from Inverness Bus Station on our 16 seater mini coach, we travel north through the Black Isle and past the imposing Dunrobin Castle driving on along the main coastal road north until we hit the North coast of Scotland and cross the Pentland Firth to the Orkney Isles by ferry.
You will stay in Kirkwall, the modern-day capital of Orkney, for the next two nights.
Day 2
Today is your chance to explore the modern and ancient wonders of this fantastic island; a land of contrasts, where fertile green pastures are fringed by shores of golden sands washed by waters of the both the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
Highlights of the day include a visit to Skara Brae, the mystical prehistoric stone circle at Brodgar, the standing stones of Stenness, and Maeshowe, where in the 12th century the Vikings left one of the largest collections of Norse runic inscriptions.
Day 3
You'll have your last chance to wander in Kirkwall and visit the local cathedral and old town before we catch the ferry back to Scotland's mainland. You travel through the wild regions of Caithness and Sutherland that suffered so much when local farmers were thrown off the land for the sheep. The landscape here was formed by human habitation but has been emptied by the Clearances. You’ll find out about the highland clearances ,a world-changing period in Scotland’s dark history, and get a glimpse of some of Scotland’s most remote fishing villages.
We should arrive back to Inverness early evening.
Awesome Orkney Tour
We did the three day Orkney tour from Inverness with tour guide Heather. The trip was a jam-packed three day trip filled with plenty of historic stops along the way. Heather was very knowledgeable in regards to Scottish and Orkney history and was a pleasure to have as a host. She was adept at tweaking our itinerary for spontaneous stops or making adjustments due to crowds, weather etc... The van was very comfortable and spacious.
