Sannachan, Plockton, Sleeps 6
With wonderful views across Loch Carron towards Duncraig Castle , this traditional stone holiday cottage is set in the heart of the National Trust village of Plockton. Refurbished to a very high standard, it overlooks the harbour and has its own secure hillside garden to the rear, as well as a lochside garden across the road.
Thriving as a result of the influence of the North Atlantic Drift, many palm trees adorn the area, giving the village an almost Mediterranean feel. Yachts and dinghies sail past leisurely, and together with the pretty flower-filled gardens of the houses lining the shore, and the brilliance of Plockton’s light effects, the village has become something of a haunt for artists, who can often be seen busy at their easels. Plockton’s claim to fame arrived in the mid-1990s, when the BBC selected the village as the setting for three of its series of the television drama Hamish Macbeth. Originally Plockton was a crofting hamlet until the eighteenth century, when it became prosperous as a small fishing port and prawns are still landed at the old pier. Seal spotting and fishing trips can be arranged from here, and the village boasts a fine selection of inns serving seafood specialities.
Apart from the village of Plockton itself, the National Trust also oversees the Lochalsh Woodland garden on the Balmacara Estate, and the medieval ruins of Strome Castle. Close by is the former Jacobite fortress of Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed castles ever. A picture of enchantment, it is situated at the meeting place of three lochs and joined to the mainland by a causeway. Within a few miles also are the magnificent Falls of Glomach, tumbling down a sheer drop of 750ft. Applecross and Wester Ross are nearby, with the Isle of Skye bridge, 6 miles. Hill walking, fly fishing and water sports locally. Shops 50 yards.

7th comment: Excellent location and overall a very pleasant and well-equipped property with a good layout. We enjoyed the outdoor space. Traditional cottage style which we liked. It is in the middle of the village and so is - as you would expect - quite a busy spot. Aug 2010.
8th comment: Very well appointed. Generous provision of dvds and barbecue equipment, cleaning items etc. July 2010.
9th comment: The property was furnished in a very tasteful, homely and cosy way and was surprisingly roomy (although there were only 4 of us in a 6 bed cottage). The best thing about the property, however, was its location with stunning views out of all the front windows across the bay, the loch and the hills beyond. The fact that it also had a front garden on the shores of the loch was a further excellent feature. July 2010.
10th comment: A beautiful cottage in a stunning setting. Well fitted out kitchen. Showers excellent. Back garden very steep but worth the climb for the view. Garden at front small but charming. Our first visit it won’t be our last. June 2010.
