Scotland has its own national ballet, opera and orchestra as well as many fine theatres up and down the country. Glasgow and Edinburgh have lively club scenes, but you'll also find nightclubs outside the major cities. For a comprehensive guide to what's on in Glasgow and Edinburgh, look out for the fortnightly listings magazine The List.

Celtic culture is alive and well in many parts, particularly in the Highlands and Islands, and you'll be able to hear traditional folk music in many pubs. At weekends you may also happen across a ceilidh in the local village hall or hotel. These traditional dances can be raucous affairs but great fun, even if you don't have a clue what you're doing. Ask for details at the local tourist office or in the pub
