Heron Cottage, Lochgilphead - Sleeps 2
Set within the charming, private estate of Kirnan House, in an AONB, these properties (SEEJ, SEEK and SGGI) offer ideal, peaceful holiday retreats. Surrounded by 605 acres of unspoilt woodland and 25 acres of garden, they are sympathetically renovated to the highest standard. Steeped in history, the estate was originally owned by the Dukes of Argyll and the gardens are recognised as the second finest on the west coast of Scotland. This is a haven for wildlife lovers, with red, sika and roe deer roaming freely, as well as pine martens, red squirrels and woodcock. Scottish wildcats are frequently seen in the glen and there are mating pairs of osprey on the River Add, with eagles regularly sighted. The woods contain the remains of an historic settlement, Kirnan Beg. Kirnan is an environmentally-friendly estate which aims to become self supporting, and can offer guests fresh eggs, vegetables, pork and lamb. Where possible, everything used on the estate is recycled. The estate is an ideal base for fishing, walking, stalking, shooting, cycling, sightseeing and horse riding. The owner’s RIB boat is available by separate arrangement and sea and loch fishing can be provided, as well as scenic tours of the coastline. Local attractions include excellent restaurants (especially seafood), museums, castles and the famous Crinan Canal. Under an hour from Oban, with day trips to the beautiful west coast islands, and closer ferries to Gigha and Jura. This is an important area historically, with the highest concentration of Neolithic monuments in Great Britain. Close to the famous Kilmartin Museum. Shops 4 miles, pub 2 miles.
