St Andrews Castle Course
For a somewhat different golfing experience, you really cannot go wrong with a good round at the Castle Course here at St Andrews. The Castle Course is one of the more under rated courses in Scotland and a place many a golfer has fallen in love with over the years.
What Makes St Andrews Castle Course Such A Special Place?
Well to start with this is not a links course which to some might sound surprising, but the Castle Course has never once pretended to be anything more than the fantastic, seaside course that it is. You get a really “special” kind of view here with the gorgeous wee town of St Andrews as your backdrop and you are so close to the ocean that I know more than a few fine golfers who have sliced one in!
The course is a great wee challenge and right from that first hole. A challenging 246 yard, par 4. You know that you are in for a fun, but tricky day of golf. You gents who love to play a more “tactical” game of golf where you really like to focus on your position will be in heaven here as, The Castle Course is not ideal for players who like to just smash the ball as hard as they can and hope to get to the green by luck. Patience, skill and a good positive attitude are what will make the difference here. The greens do have a bit of a reputation for being a little on the shabby side with some people saying they do drag a bit compared to the other St Andrews courses, but to be fair it is a minor complaint and something that can be worked around and also something that adds to the challenge of a round here.
The St Andrews Castle Course is probably not the first course that will pop into your mind when you come to St Andrews for a wee golfing break, but it does offer an experience that you cannot get anywhere else in St Andrews.
Best Hole At St Andrews Castle Course
Hole 17
Of course this is all down to personal preference, but the par 3, hole 17 may not be the most difficult shot in theory, but with a large area of all kinds of mean and nasty plant life to the right of it, making sure you stay to the left is vital as if you do not, you are going to head back to the drop zone and try to get past this area again! Again in theory this little par 3 should be easy and if you take your time and hit your shot right it is…….. but if you mess up you are in big trouble.
A Few Things You Need To Know About St Andres Castle Course
Caddie Service
They do actually offer a caddie service here, but be sure to book as far in advance as you can. A caddie is a great way to help you around some of the trickier sections, offer some advice and even entertain with a little bit of history about the course.
Trolleys & Buggies
Being right next to the sea and the unpredictable Scottish weather mean that the grounds staff have their hands full here. So as a result, use of trolleys is limited to use only after 12:00 and between April and October. As far as buggies go if you have a condition that requires you need a buggy then you can request one, but buggies are not allowed for everybody not just for the wear and tear on the course, but because the people hear want you to walk so you can experience the beauty of the course.
Prepare To Play
No matter if you are new to golf or just want a fun wee tune up, their Prepare To Play warm up lesson that they offer here is fun way to get ready for the exciting day of golf you have ahead of you.
Making The Most Of Your Time In St Andrews
A Nice Place To Eat And Drink
The Russell Hotel has one of the most diverse menus you will ever see! Offering such things as a huge char grilled steak burger to something more fun and basic like macaroni and cheese! The Russell Hotel is the kind of place that has a little something for everyone. They also have a cracking wee bar here with plenty of good ales, wines and lagers for you.
Something To Do Before Or After Tee Time
St Andrews is one of the most amazing towns in Scotland so if you want to take in one of its “attractions” then I highly recommend a day, shopping. Now I know to some this sounds like a nightmare, but with its old timey look and charm walking around the streets is a lot of fun.
