Pubs are often regarded as a poor substitute for a "proper" restaurant in the eating out stakes but the Foundry Bar in Perth is proof that they can be an ideal alternative and also excellent value for money.

This relatively recent addition to the Fair City's range of eateries and drinking spots is, as the name suggests, built on the site of a former foundry and remnants of its past are much in evidence in the dcor.

Metal joists adorn the ceiling, steel partitions and stairs separate the bar and the dining area and old press pictures of the original foundry decorate the walls.

Although there is an industrial appearance to the building the restaurant section is very comfortable with plenty of tables and space.

The food is as might be expected for somewhere aiming to cater for such a wide range of customers from business lunchers to shoppers looking for a quick snack.

As well as a range of main dishes there's a selection of baguettes (2.45) and baked potatoes (3.35) with a choice of fillings including egg mayo, tuna mayo, honey roast ham, chicken curry and roast beef. Pitta pockets are also available priced at 2.95.

The main dishes include haddock and chips (5.25), chicken tikka (5.20), lamb hotpot (5.25) and Hawaian chicken escalope (5.25) and there is also a range of pizzas (3.80), omelettes (4.20), salads (4.95) and speciality sandwiches including the Foundry BLT (3.95), BLTC (4.30) and panini (3.20).

I opted for the BLTC, a substantial toasted sandwich crammed full of chicken, bacon, lettuce and tomato served with salad and chips while my partner chose the Hawaiian escalope, a piece of spicy breaded chicken served with a fruity salad and a portion of chips.

It may not be the ultimate in gourmet dining but the food was tasty, filling and served quickly enough not to have to rush during a lunch hour.

Also in the Foundry's favour is that it continues to serve food throughout the day and into early evening. It even serves breakfasts too.
