Cathouse, 15 Union St, Tel: 2486606. Glasgow's only rock club. Ideal for seeing bands before they make it big.

Clutha Vaults 167 Stockwell St, Tel: 5527520. Well-known pub which has live music nights from a wide range of local talent.

Cottier's 93-95 Hyndland St, Tel: 3573868. Good venue for more esoteric music acts, also jazz and blues (see also 'Eating').

The Garage 490 Sauchiehall St, Tel: 3321120. Medium-sized venue for bands on the verge of a breakthrough. The Halt Bar 160 Woodlands Rd, Tel: 5641527. Popular bar featuring live indie/pub rock bands two or three times a week (see also 'Bars').

King Tut's Wah Wah Hut 272a St Vincent St, Tel: 2215279. Glasgow's hallowed live music venue. Many a famous band has made the break in this cramped, sweaty club. Good bar downstairs for a pre-gig drink.

Nice 'n' Sleazy 421 Sauchiehall St, Tel: 3330900. Great bar and music venue. Everything from indie to rock downstairs while musos hang out in upstairs bar. The Scotia Bar 112 Stockwell St, Tel: 5528681. A Glasgow institution and home of Glasgow's folk scene.

Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), Finnieston Quay, Tel: 2483000. Gigantic multi-purpose venue with all the atmosphere of a disused aircraft hangar. Plays host to the likes of Robbie Williams and Pavarotti.

13th Note CafĂ© 50-60 King St, Tel: 5531638. Another major player on the alternative live music scene. Popular and lively venue for up-and-coming indie/rock bands. Also good veggie food in the bar upstairs (see 'Eating'). Also

13th Note Club 260 Clyde St, Tel: 2432177, which plays host to unsigned bands.

Comedy Clubs

The Stand Comedy Club 333 Woodlands Rd, T0870-6006055. Top notch comedy Thu-Sun.

Blackfriars 36 Bell St, Tel: 5525924. Regular slots on Sun nights. Also live jazz (see below).

Curlers 256 Byres Rd, Tel: 3386511. Next to Hillhead Underground. Real student hole which claims to be the oldest pub in the city. Live comedy on Wed nights, also live bands (see below) and DJs at weekends.

The State Bar 148 Holland St, Tel: 3322159. Good comedy club on Thu nights. Also live blues on Tue and a good selection of real ales. Not a bad pub, actually. Waxy's 20 Candleriggs, Tel: 5528717. In the Merchant City. Comedy on Thu nights, and added attractions such as cheap cocktails and mega-cheap lunches.


Barrowlands

Rock and pop venue. Famous old East End ballroom and now Glasgow's liveliest and best-loved gig venue. Popular with acts just breaking through and big names trying to rediscover what it's all about. Tel: 0141 552 4601
